We have kids to raise, bills to pay, projects to start and to finish, deadlines to meet, relationships and dogs to rescue….what’s a few injuries!
I’m old enough to have to really think about it when someone asks my age. I think I’m 38. For a few weeks I’ve been pretty put out due to a few injuries. Nothing serious, a reoccurring neck discomfort that I know how to treat with some Physical Therapy and some new lower back pain.
NEW LOWER BACK PAIN??????? I’m too short to have lower back pain. Totally unfair.
Discouraged because it was 1 day post squatting 240lbs.
My better half left me with some words of encouragement when I left for the gym this morning. He said, “At least you’re not hurt from sitting on the couch all day, you’re an injured athlete”.
As I benched a new personal record this morning (140lbs) 6 reps. I decided that my injuries were not a result of getting old but rather a result of getting better. An opportunity to learn more about my body as a result of being fearless and determined. I consulted a wonderful Physical Therapist friend (one of the many benefits of my job) and learned that I need to directly address and strengthen my abdominal muscles (still recovering from C-section) to help support my back when squatting. Mindful meditation during strength training.
So keep trucking and bring on the abdominal burn !!!!!!!

Karen, your better half is right! You are a top athlete! When I taught lots of aerobics classes on top of a full time job, my therapist also said I was an athlete. I was annoyed with the signs my body was giving me, but in the end I learned a lot. I learned that I can’t run around for 24 hours a day and expect to be pain free after a teaching 3 hours in a row 😛 I think you’re doing a great job and your blog is a lot of fun to read. Keep up the good work and listen to your body!
