Stay Focused

March 9, 2014 by Karen Leave a Comment

Every now and then I get a not so gentle reminder of how important it is to stay focused, especially at the gym. This looks worse than it feels but it happened when I was putting 45 lb weights onto a machine. It was the middle of the afternoon, which makes the gym a different experience. I’m rushing to get my workout done during the boys nap (working mom guilt) so I don’t miss awake time with them, the gym is more crowded and I’m usually throwing a grocery store run in the mix while I’m out. It is hard to stay focused in the middle of the day, you’re either trying to catch up or trying to get ahead.
5 am sounds like a “yikes, that’s early” but this little mishap would never have happen during that time. 5-5:30 am, the weight room is usually all mine. It’s my “me” time. My focus is all on me, not awake enough yet to think about anything else. I literally roll out of bed, dress, grab coffee and go. I’m so focused I can get a great workout in 30-40 minutes. I’ve had a few trainers but one of the best taught me to not worry about the weight, focus on the feeling and the muscle you’re working on. Focusing on tightening up the muscles while you’re working them makes a huge impact, you’re not wasting time when working out this way. The leg press is where you can really take advantage. When you focus on your leg press there may be moments where you actually relax your muscle, DON’T. Keep the muscle tight and work until failure, you’ll feel great afterward. You may need a wheelchair to get to your car but if you’re looking for the jello leg feeling after a workout…address your FOCUS.
