The 5 am Happy Hour

March 5, 2014 by Karen Leave a Comment

Back in the BT (before twins) days 5PM meant Happy Hour.  I was working a job where 9-5 meant something.  9 am was coffee, emails and maybe a meeting.  Now it’s snack time.  5PM used to be quitting time, perhaps head to the bar for a drink or meet my wife somewhere.  Now at 5PM, if I don’t get dinner started it may cause a chain reaction- late bath time, bed too late that leads all the way to the kids not getting that acceptance letter they want or at least it feels that way to me sometimes..

5AM was once a WTF am I doing up time.  Now it’s the new happy hour.  It’s for writing or for the gym.   I often see people post articles about the habits of highly productive people.  One of them is always to wake earlier.  I’m assuming these are all CEO or inventor types.  I further assume the majority of those have kids.  Take 5AM away for a parent and the productivity chart flat-lines.   I know many successful childless people and guess what.  They don’t get up at 5AM.   They create into the night, often with wine or beer in hand and going to bed after midnight.
5AM is the domain of the parent. If you want to get anywhere use it wisely.  Sometimes we wonder what 4AM is like but only flirt with it, while 5AM is our lover.  If you’re faithful to it, it will reward you.
