Quick Trip to Assateague

March 10, 2014 by Chris Leave a Comment

Before trekking out to one of favorite local spots, we made a quick staple for a weekend hike.  Peanut Butter Balls.  Simple ingredients we always have in.  Oats, PB, flax seed and a bit of good old maple syrup is all you need

Like many of the things we do, we’ve been eye-ballin’ it when it comes to measuring.  Try having a fit food blog were nothing is measured, because our measuring cups are already in the dishwasher.  That’s not going to work, but since we run the dishwasher sometimes twice a day the measuring things are actually clean much of the time.

 Peanut Butter Balls

1 cup Oatmeal
3 -4 tbsp PB
1/8 cup of flax seed
1 tps maple syrup

Roll them into a size you’re comfortable with.   Keep chilled.
I did a quick tally for nutrition and it’s pretty nice.  Especially if you carry a 2 year old a quarter mile.  You’ll need it.
Calories – 215
Carbs -15
Protein – 8
Fat 14
Sugar – 5

We brought them on our mini hike on the trail behind the Assateague Visitor Center.   You won’t find the horses on this side of the bay but it’s a easy trail for a 26 month olds with some great spot for photos.

I took the kids on my first solo outings to the visitor center when they were just a year old, then did the trail with them last fall with the stroller.  Yesterday, we did it on foot and I’ve been thankful for the cold weather hoping it may reduce the tick population.

In past trips with Milo I’ve encountered lots of snakes, wild turkey and deer, but there was nothing much for the kids, save for some pill bugs and a snail or two.   John and Julian weren’t dissuaded and talked today about revisiting, but mostly they just wanted more Peanut Butter Balls.
