Traveling with Twins: NASA Wallops Flight Facility

December 12, 2014 by Chris Leave a Comment

Spending time on the Eastern Shore and searching for a different kinda place to take the kids?  A place that will liven up your Instagram?  A place to see rocket’s red glare and on rare occasion, bomb’s bursting in air?  Visit the NASA Wallops Flight Facility Visitor’s Center.

Located just over the bridge from Chincoteague Island, the visitor’s center has a few  hands-on exhibits. On weekends, they have kids centric programs open to the public. It’s free and fun.  When the kids and I went, we learned all about bats and their relationship to NASA. There was a short film and fun arts and craft activity afterwards.
It’s a small museum but it’s has interesting exhibits as well as a spherical movie screen unlike anything I had ever seen.  The kids were enthralled as was I (You can see a brief example in our week 11 recap video below)

Every Saturday each month they have different activities starting at 11am, including Story Time, model rocket launches and puppet shows. The gift shop will likely garner the most attention.  We picked up a few things, including Astronaut Ice Cream.  I’d have to say dried desert has come a long way since I was a kid trying it for the first time at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia.

Follow the facility on Facebook for updated information and upcoming launches!
